GP CELLULOSE DONATES MEMPHIS OFFICE BUILDING TO UNITED WAY OF THE MID-SOUTH

“This Gift Helps Strengthen United Way’s Support of Our Community”

On March 26, 2015 United Way of the Mid-South announced that GP Cellulose in Memphis, a subsidiary of Georgia-Pacific, had donated its 37,000 square-foot office building in North Memphis valued at $1.3 million.

Located near the historic Binghampton neighborhood in the Heights, the building will serve as headquarters for the United Way of the Mid-South. The building and its location will give United Way a more visible presence in the community and potential for more partnerships which will positively impact people’s lives across the region.

“GP Cellulose is thrilled to help United Way of the Mid-South strengthen its support to the region through this building donation,” said Pat Boushka, president of GP Cellulose. “We believe that giving back to the communities where we operate is a key social component of our sustainability initiatives as strong communities make life better for everyone – our employees, neighbors and customers, so as we worked together to develop this opportunity, it was a natural fit.”

Along with the office building, GP Cellulose has donated the existing office equipment and furnishings, and a cash contribution of $100,000.00 that United Way of the Mid-South can use in the transition into the new building. Until recently, the building was used as the headquarters location for Buckeye Technologies, a company Georgia-Pacific acquired in 2013.

“An incredibly generous donation like this provides an unprecedented opportunity for us. Not only will our relocation to our new offices allow us to be a more efficient organization, but it will also immediately change the narrative about what United Way means to the communities we serve, like North Binghampton,” said Dr. Kenneth S. Robinson, President & CEO of United Way of the Mid-South.

“As we’ve recently entered a new season of leadership in our organization, moving into this neighborhood opens the door to new partnerships which will have a very meaningful, direct impact on the lives of families right here in the heart of the Mid-South,” Robinson said.

Georgia-Pacific is a long-time supporter of the United Way in locations where it has facilities. The donation underscores GP Cellulose’s commitment to creating the greatest value in the communities where it operates. To date, GP’s Memphis Cellulose mill and the Cellulose Technology & Innovation Center have donated more than $200,000 to local charitable organizations that support education, community enrichment, entrepreneurship, and the environment, since GP acquired the former Buckeye Technologies in 2013.
“We extend our deepest thanks to Georgia Pacific for this generous donation.  Located in the heart of our city, the building is a visible milestone achievement and positions United Way to be more impactful and relevant in bringing the Mid-South together to address our local priority issues,” said Mr. Shannon A. Brown, SVP and Chief HR & Diversity Officer, FedEx Express and volunteer Chairman of the Board of Directors for United Way of the Mid-South.
